The main symptom of a faulty hydraulic valve lifter is the frustrating ticking noise. The noise is caused by the lack of adequate lubrication and happens more often when the temperatures outside are low.
There are other issues that can cause ticking and rattling noises. However, in BMWs that were manufactured between 2004 and 2015, the hydraulic valve lifter was the common source of the problem.
For a short period of time, BMW offered a remedy that included replacing the existing cylinder heads with a newer model. This was supposed to help take care of the lubrication problem, but in the end, it was in most cases, unsuccessful. Some repair shops were able to find a temporary solution that involved using a lighter weight oil.
There are no known issues that are attributed to the N52 lifter tick issue. Although you can continue to drive your BMW, it is not recommended. The noising drivers hear could come from a number of other engine problems, not just the lifter ticking issue. It is recommended that you have the symptom diagnosed by a trusted BMW specialist.
