BMWs are exceptional vehicles that offer outstanding performance while being safe and dependable. But just like all other vehicles, they have their own unique issues. BMWs that are equipped with the N52 engine are known to experience the dreaded lifter ticking issue. This problem is a major concern for drivers, and it is something that you should be aware of if your BMW has the N52 engine. The N52 engine was a technological advancement that was ahead of its time. However, even though it was highly rated by drivers and car enthusiasts alike, it began to show signs of engineering and design defects shortly after it was released.

The hydraulic valve lifter is made up of 4 different parts, the body, check ball mechanism, plunger and socket. Its main function is creating the necessary space needed for other parts to expand and contract in the engine.
The main symptom of a faulty hydraulic valve lifter is the frustrating ticking noise. The noise is caused by the lack of adequate lubrication and happens more often when the temperatures outside are low.
There are other issues that can cause ticking and rattling noises. However, in BMWs that were manufactured between 2004 and 2015, the hydraulic valve lifter was the common source of the problem.
For a short period of time, BMW offered a remedy that included replacing the existing cylinder heads with a newer model. This was supposed to help take care of the lubrication problem, but in the end, it was in most cases, unsuccessful. Some repair shops were able to find a temporary solution that involved using a lighter weight oil.
There are no known issues that are attributed to the N52 lifter tick issue. Although you can continue to drive your BMW, it is not recommended. The noising drivers hear could come from a number of other engine problems, not just the lifter ticking issue. It is recommended that you have the symptom diagnosed by a trusted BMW specialist.
