7 Steps on How To Prepare Your Car For Storage

Whether you're jetting off for an extended vacation or stowing away your cherished ride for the winter, preparing your car for storage is crucial, even for a short period of time. While it might seem like a straightforward task, overlooking certain aspects can lead to potential issues that could dampen your automotive experience. To protect your vehicle from the perils of long-term storage, here are seven simple yet essential steps that will preserve its integrity and performance, allowing you to reunite with your beloved car just as you left it.

Step 1: Thorough Cleaning

Start by giving your car a comprehensive cleaning, both inside and out. Remove any debris, dirt, or food particles from the interior to prevent the formation of mold and unpleasant odors. A thorough exterior wash and wax will protect the paint and ensure that your car remains free from any corrosive substances during its time in storage.

Step 2: Fluid Check and Change

Inspect all essential fluids, including the engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and coolant. Consider changing these fluids if they are due for a replacement, as old or contaminated fluids can cause corrosion and damage to critical components over time. Topping off the fuel tank and adding a fuel stabilizer will prevent the gasoline from deteriorating and clogging the fuel system.

Step 3: Tire Care

Inflate your tires to the recommended pressure to prevent flat spots from developing during storage. Placing the car on jack stands can alleviate the weight on the tires, further preventing flat spots. Additionally, consider overinflating the tires slightly to compensate for any air loss over the storage period.

Step 4: Battery Maintenance

Detach the battery and store it in a cool, dry place to prevent it from draining or corroding. Connecting the battery to a maintenance charger will ensure that it retains its charge and remains in optimal condition throughout the storage duration.

Step 5: Interior Protection

Shield the interior of your car from sunlight and dust by using a high-quality car cover or a cotton sheet. This barrier will prevent the accumulation of dust and debris while preserving the upholstery and dashboard from potential sun damage.

Step 6: Rodent Prevention

Block any potential entry points to your car, such as the exhaust pipe or air intake, to prevent rodents from nesting within the vehicle. Placing traps or deterrents near the storage area can further safeguard your car from any unwanted critters seeking shelter.

Step 7: Regular Check-ups

Schedule periodic visits to your car during its storage period to ensure that all systems are functioning correctly. Starting the engine and letting it run for a brief period can prevent the build-up of moisture and keep the engine components lubricated.
